It falls on the 11th lunar day of the waxing fortnight in the solar month of Dhanu (Pausha month in the Hindu calendar, corresponding to late December to January). It is associated with attaining moksha (liberation) and is also called Moksha Ekadasi. Devotees believe fasting on this day equals fasting on all other Ekadashis of the year.
